Betting is now open for the Indian Premier League even though it’s still months away. There’s a great chance to find some early value in the betting for the winners market. The ods will change once the auction takes place and we see where the top players at the event are going.
It’s no surprise to see last seasons winners the Mumbai Indians leading the betting at 4/1 currently. 2018’s winners the Chennai Super Kings are second in the betting currently so the bookmakers are expecting it to go with recent form.

Like the odds? Bet on the IPL with Betway here
Currently, the winners market is the only one on offer across all online betting sites. These odds have been updated after the IPL Auction and we have seen shorter odds for the Dehli Capitals who have moved from 7/1 into 6/1 after some smart buys. The only drifter in the odds (odds getting longer) are the Kings XI Punjab who have gone from 9/1 to 10/1. This is no major surprise as it was never going to be a big auction this year with the number of retained players each team has on the books.
We were expecting the see the Knight Riders come in a little as we felt they did well in the auction with the purchase of Pat Cummings for 15.5 CR.
Update: Melbet is now offering odds on who will make the top 2 in the tournament (See the Melbet India bonus here). Melbet offer odds in the decimal format on their site.
- Mumbai Indians 2.335
- Sunrisers Hyderabad 2.5
- Chennai Super Kings 2.64
- Royal Challengers Bangalore 3.32
- Kolkata Knight Riders 3.32
- Dehli Capitals 3.32
- Kings XI Punjab 4
- Rajasthan Royals 4
As you can see the betting follows the winners betting and offers some good value. The Indians look excellent value to make another final at over even money.
For an outside bet, we really like Kings XI Punjab to make the final at 4/1 as an outsider bet. Whilst they are not as strong as some of the other teams they’ve added some strength with Glenn Maxwell and Chris Jordan who has been doing well in the Big Bash this year. The addition of Sheldon Cottrell is also a good move, he has bowled well in India for the West Indies in the recent T20 and one-day series. He’s a young blower with some skills and we’re expecting to see him saluting throughout the tournament!
Indian Premier League Betting Tips
Our tips cover the main markets and will be added to as more markets become available.
Who will win the IPL 2020?
The favourites are Mumbai Indians and its easy to see why after last years event. For a better value pick, we like the look of Dehli Capitals now at 6/1
Why Dehli Capitals are the value pick for us!
At 6/1 the Capitals have caught our eye with the deal to take off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the Kings Punjab. This is available with 22bet – You can find these odds and get the details of the 22bet welcome bonus (India) here.
This is quite a coup of a player with 15 wickets in the last IPL and a veteran of the event whos record reads 125 wickets in 139 matches.
While Dehli has never really performed in the IPL since its formation in 2008 they look like a team who mean business this year and will be looking to take their first trophy.
Dehli Capitals players added in the Auction
- Jason Roy 1.5 CR
- Shimron Hetmyer 7.75 CR
- Mohit Sharma 50 L
- Alex Carey 2.4 CR
- Chris Woakes 1.5 CR
- Marcus Stoinis 4.8 CR
- Lalit Yadav 20 L
We’ve seen some of these players in action in the Big Bash and they look like good signings. We’ve been really impressed with all-rounder Alex Carey whos performing well for a player picked up for 2.4 CR. The addition of the experienced Jason Roy and Shimron Hetmyer adds a quality and depth to the team.
At 6/1 the Dehli Capitals are certainly a team to watch this year.
IPL 2020 Auction
This year’s auction is set to be less of a big affair with a number of teams maintaining their current players. The Chennai Super Kings have just 2 spots to fill this year. Here were the teams and their remain budgets before the auction –

IPL 2019 Stats
When we look for form for the 2020 IPL we can look at last years top player to see who to watch and potentially who to bet on. We also like to look for underperforming players who could do better this year where we will find more value odds.
It is no surprise to see some big names in the top 10 run makers from the 2019IPL and some of these names will be up there for the 2020 IPL too. Names such as David Warner, De Kock, and Chris Gayle would be expected to be in the running for top batsman again this year.
Top 10 IPL Batsman
- Warner 692 runs
- Rahul 593 runs
- De Kock 529 runs
- Dhawan 521 runs
- Russell 510 runs
- Gayle 490 runs
- Pant 488 runs
- Kohli 464 runs
- Iyer 463 runs
- Bairstow 445 runs
Some selected other batsmen
- De Villiers – 11th – 442 runs
- Dhoni – 13th – 416 runs
- Sharma – 14th – 405 runs
- Smith – 27th – 319 runs
After his incredible Ashes performance, we are expecting to see some increased interest in Australian Steve Smith. Although that was in the long form of the game it will still have generated more interest in him as a batsman with that fine form.
The same could be said of Ben Stokes after his heroic batting performance in the 3rd test.
