A bumper day of racing ahead with 6 UK meetings including a good looking card at York. World racing takes place in South Africa, USA and France. Later in the day there is racing from Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Nap Of The Day: York 14.40 (UK)

Starman

Our rating

4.7/5

Trainer: Ed Walker

Jockey: Oisin Murphy

Weight: 9-8

Age : 4

Form: 1110-

Despite a slip up in the last race finishing 14/16 Staman is a horse to watch. 9/2 odds seem overpriced for a horse that has won on this course and over this distance last year. Each way is 3 places at 1/5 odds.

  • Starman caught my eye with some impressive early performances. As a 4-year-old it’s run well winning 3 of the 4 races so far.
  • Oisin Murphy rides for the first time taking over from Marquand who has run all 4 previously.
  • The last run ended with a disappointing 14th of 16 runners but was the first race for Staman on soft ground. The ground at York is listed as good to soft in places so will suit the horse better than the last run.
  • The odds of 9/2* at the time of writing had shortened from 5/1. This will be an interesting run to see how it goes and if it places will certainly be one for the notebook for future races.

Horse To Place Tip: York 15.40

Elakazaam

Our Rating

3.9/5

Owner: K R Burke

Jockey: C Lee

Weight: 8-6

Age : 3

Form: 71-25

Elakazaam makes its first appearance on turf and has some potential for a to place or an each-way punt in this race. We think it's better than the 22/1 odds show. Disappointing last run and will need a little more here but could be well suited to the turf.

  • Finished 5th of 7 last time out at Wolverhampton. Chased the leaders well early on but was denied a run by other horses (said the jockey). Moved over to the other side of the track but lacked any extra in the final stages. Could have placed with a clear run.
  • Had a good 2nd in March on the all-weather again finishing 2nd by 1 1/4 lengths to Fiordland. Went out at an SP of 7/1.
  • The only win came in December 2020 with an excellent run from an SP of 25/1. Took some time to get going in this race but when shaken up it took the inside left and kept on for the win.
  • Overall Elakazaam is an interesting horse with potential with a chance of track. Odds of 20/1+ for the win are a little out there but 4 places are on offer for each-way punters.

Long Shot Of The Day: York 13.40 (UK)

Shandoz

Our Rating

4.1/5

Owner: R Varian

Jockey: Tom Marquand

Age : 4

Form: 341/110-

Latest Odds* : 7/1

2 wins and a 3rd from 5 races caught my eye. The odds of 7/1 are not quite as long as we would like but are enough to get our attention.

  • 10th of 17 last time out. The owner said the horse did not suit the ground and would prefer a faster-going surface. Today surface is good – good to soft in places so should be better suited.
  • Has been the favourite in the last 2 races going oof at 7/2 and 11/2 respectively.
  • Won at 7/2 on the 5th of September at Ascot. Finished strongly after being held up early on. The ground was good – good to soft in places.
  • The previous win was in August 20 after a 322-day break. Again Shandoz finished well, running strongly over the last 3 furlongs.
