Our pre-match preview
The day has finally arrived – The IPL is Back!
There have been times this year that we dod not think we would get to write any IPL previews and the chances of the tournament taking place looked very bleak indeed. Fortunately, the UAE stepped in to offer the teams the chance to form and IPL bubble and get the 2020 IPL on.
The opening game sees last year’s champions, the Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in a repeat of the final. Last time they played the Indians won by 1 run with no balls to spare – what a final that was!
The weather in the UAE should not affect many of the games and this one looks set to take place on a hot and sunny day.
Pre Match Odds & Form
It is the first game of the tournament so we do not have any of this year’s form to look at, we will look back on last year’s performance and that of the players who have played recently.

To win the match odds*
- Mumbai Indians 8/11 – Betway
- Chennai Super Kings 21/20 – Betway
It is no surprise to us to see the Indians as the favourites for the opening match. When we look at the IPL odds to win the tournament MI are the favourites to repeat their success.
Mumbai Indians form
In the group stages last year the Indians won 9 of their 14 matches. This was matches by CSK & the Dehli Capitals. They finished top of the league with a net run rate of +0.421.
We have found a shocking Mumbai Indians stat – They have not won their opening game in the IPL since 2014. That’s a defeat in the first game for the last 7 years!
They will be looking to change that this year and get off to a winning start.
The Mumbai Indians squad is packed with quality and experience. Yadav, Sharma, Bumrah to name a few of the Indian players. There’s also quality in their overseas players as well. It has been mentioned that Aussie Chris Lynn may not even get a game for the Indians due to the depth they have in the team – Lynn was absolutely on fire in the Big Bash but has been poor in the recent CPL T20 games.
Head to head
As mentioned, these teams fought out the final last year with the Indians winning by 1 run. They have an excellent rivalry in the IPL with Chennai winning 11 and Mumbai winning 17 of their 28 head to head matches. When they have played in the opening match CSK has always come out on top.
If we look back at the 2019 head to head it was a clean sweet for the Indians winning all 4 of their meetings. Other seasons have all be evenly balanced out with a mixed number of wins for each of the teams.
CSK was within 1 run of getting their 4th IPL title. Unfortunately for them, the Indians took the win to make it 4-3 in titles between the two teams. You have to go back to 2016 to find a winner that wasn’t one of these two teams. It would be no surprise to see them battling it out for the title again this season.
As mentioned in the Indians for CSK lost 4 in 4 against Mumbai last season. They will be fired up and ready to avenge that defeat here. This could be an early defining game for them.
In our opinion, Mumbai Indians have a stronger squad than CSK this year.
Top team batsman pre-match odds*
Who will be the top batsman for the team?
Mumbai Batsmen latest odds
- Rohit Sharma 11/5
- Q De Kock 9/4
- Chris Lynn 3/1
- S Yadav 7/2
- A Tare 11/2
- I Kishan 11/2
- K Pollard 6/1
- Others 8/1+
Sharma will pretty much always be the top player in this filed and offers very little value, in our opinion. Chris Lynn at 3/1 catches our eye but that is if its Chris Lynn from the Big Bash and not bringing the form of the CPL with him – where he has been poor.
CSK top batsman odds
- Faf Du Plessis 9/4
- S Watson 3/1
- A Rayudu 13/4
- M Vijay 15/4
- K Jadhav 4/1
- N Jagadeesan 9/2
- MS Dhoni 5/1
- Others 12/1+
All as prices we would expect, Dhoni looks a little short but is backed heavily because of who he is.
Man of the match pre-match odds*
- Sharma 8/1
- De Kock 9/1
- Lynn 11/1
- du Plessis 11/1
- S Watson 11/1
- H Pandya 12/1
- A Rayudu 13/1
- Others 14/1+
This market is based on who will be awarded the man of the award at the end of the match. It offers some great value if you can pick the winner or cover a few of the players.

We will have 3 tips in total for this match, once we have more markets!
Tip 1 – 10cric – Chennai Super Kings to win – WIN
This match is a very tricky one to call with Mumbai being historically poor on the opening game but having the edge over CSK last match. The odds on CSK at 21/20 is just too high to ignore currently. They have been excellent over the past few seasons and I can see them being determined to get a win to get started and avenge last seasons final defeat
Tip 2 – Betway – Man of the match – Sharma 8/1 – Lynn 11/1- Pollard 14/1 – LOST
This seems a wide-open market but by back 3 players who we know can perform then we can get some good value if either of the 3 wins. We will put n equal stake on each player and home for the best. If Sharma performs and the team wins the 8/1 on a man of the match performance looks a lot better value than 3/1 on the top team batsman market.
Tip 3 – Betway – #Betyourway – Rohit and de Kock both to hit a six 6/4 – LOST
This is a market we are big fans of and is only on Betway! Here you can combine bets to get multiple bets on the same market. All we need to win is both players to hit one over the rope!
*Please only bet what you can afford to lose. Odds were correct at the time of writing and subject to change.
