The second test between England and the West Indies starts on Thursday. England went into the first test as strong favourites but their batting was suspect and the West Indies won, deservedly, by four wickets.
The return to Old Trafford again sees England start as a strong favourite. The weather appears to be more settled for this test which could lead to less swing and higher runs.

Whilst England are not as short as the first test at 2/5 they’re not backable for us. The price on the West Indies is tempting and may appear in our tips for the match.
The draw seems an unlikely option with the current weather forecast. It may be worth keeping an eye on as the UK has some changeable weather at the moment. Any days of rain could make the draw good value in this match.
From a traders perspective, a lay on England at such a short price should be tradeable at some point.

1st Test
This was the first match we have seen since the Covid-19 lockdown of sport and was always going to an interesting match. We dod not take any bets as we wanted to see how the game went before committing any money.
It is difficult to look back at recent form as this is baseless and could be misleading. England historically would have been a strong favourite for this match and have a higher world ranking than the West Indies but struggled with the bat last time out. The West Indies also found the conditions difficult, but the opening innings lead set them up for the match. Here’s the scorecard –
The form of Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder should be noted from the first match and they will be looking to build on that next time out. At times Gabriel was almost unplayable taking 4 for 62 in the first innings and 5 for 75 in the 2nd innings.

Top batsman odds*
Top England batsman odds
- Joe Root 11/4
- Ben Stokes 7/2
- Ollie Pope 9/2
- Rory Burns 9/2
- Dominic Sibley 5/1
- Zac Crawley 5/1
- Joe Denly 6/1
- Jos Buttler 8/1
- Rest 12/1+
This is the usual case of the big names higher up the order. Ben Stokes will always be popular in the betting as will Joe Root. Zac Crawley is one to keep an eye on with a decent 72 in the first innings last time out.
West Indies top batsman odds
- Kraigg Brathwaite 4/1
- Jermaine Blackwood 9/2
- Shai Hope 9/2
- Roston Chase 5/1
- Shamarh Brooks 5/1
- John Campbell 11/2
- Jason Holder 6/1
- Joshua Da Silva 6/1
- Rest 7/1+
This seems a more open market than the England market and could offer some value. In the last test, it was a tale of two halves. The first innings saw a steady run rate from the top order, well-supported by Shane Dowrich, 61. In the second innings, the top order performed poorly with the middle order rescuing the match with Jermaine Blackwood, 95, leading the batting.

- Crawley 12/1
- Woakes 16/1
- Holder 16/1
- Rest 18/1+
This is a tricky market to pick from and is more of a punt than a value bet. We like the look of Holder at 16/1 who performed well in the 1st test getting 6 for in the first innings.

England v West Indies 2nd test 16th July Betting Tips
Our cricket betting expert has three tips for this game
Tip 1 – 22bet – West Indies to win 15/4
After a great performance in the 1st innings, we’re expecting the Windies to come out full of confidence and ready for another win. They have bowlers in good form that the English batsmen may not fancy facing again under pressure. The pressure is on England to perform in this test which could give the Windies a good chance to have a go at them again.
We are looking at this bet from the value of the odds on offer. We will look to cash out this bet later in the match if there is a big enough movement in the odds.
Tip 2 – Any West Indies batsman to score over 100 in the first innings 2/1 – Betway #Betyourway
The centuries were non-existent in the first test but with more settled weather this could lead to bigger scores. The odds of 2/1 really caught my eye of this match. In the first test, it was Jermaine Blackwood who got closest with an impressive 95.
